About me
I am a final-year student of the Bachelor’s Degree in Astrophysics with a Minor in Data Science at the University of Santiago of Chile (USACH), expecting to graduate in 2026. My research interests lie at the intersection of observational astronomy and computational methods, with a particular focus on protoplanetary disks, planet formation, and exoplanets.
Beyond research, I am deeply committed to science communication and public outreach. I have participated in more than a dozen outreach activities across Chile—from school science fairs and university festivals to international meetings such as the ESO-ALMA Open Day and the SOCHIAS Annual Meetings—representing the Astrodiálogos project, which seeks to build bridges between indigenous knowledge and astronomy.
Research & Projects
My main technical project is DISCO (Deprojection Image Software for Circumstellar Objects), an interactive hybrid tool for the analysis of protoplanetary disk images, developed primarily in Python. I am also an active member and ambassador of the Astrodiálogos team, a project that uses virtual reality and other resources to bring astronomy to diverse communities across Chile. The initiative has been awarded the VIME Faculty of Sciences Fund in both 2024 and 2025.
Skills
I work primarily with Python (NumPy, Matplotlib, Pandas, SciPy, Astropy) for data analysis, astronomical simulations, and graphical interface development. I also have experience with basic web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and creative software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, and OBS Studio.
Outreach & Teaching
I have served as a Transition Period Tutor at USACH for three consecutive years (2024, 2025, and 2026), helping incoming astrophysics students adapt to university life. I also work as a private tutor in Physics and Mathematics for secondary school students / university students and serve as coordinator of USACH Sin Fronteras, supporting international exchange students.
Feel free to reach out at jorge.guzman.l@usach.cl — I am always happy to talk about astrophysics, open-source astronomy tools, or science communication.
